Scam Alert

Wednesday, May 28, 2008 – 3:00 pm

Spokane County Library District has just posted the following message on their website:

IMPORTANT ALERT: Possible Credit Card Scam

Attention all Spokane County Library District Patrons: A customer today informed the Library District that he received a phone call inquiring about an over-due fine and that he could pay it with a credit card either by providing the credit card information over the phone OR by logging onto www.scld.com. PLEASE NOTE that any calls you receive like this is a scam, and in no way related to Spokane County Library District or its collection of over-due fines policy. In addition, the website given by this group is not Spokane County Library District’s website, which is www.scld.org. (not dot com). If you do receive any calls asking for over-due fines payment from the Library District, please disregard and report to your local law enforcement agency.

We have not had any customers report this to us but please be aware that we will not call you regarding any fines or fees. You can check your account via our website or always call the library at 444-5333. Thank you and if you have any questions please let us know.

In response to a customer comment

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 – 2:57 pm

In response to a customer comment we’d like you to know that all Spokane Public Library locations are public buildings and as with all public buildings customers should expect that their presence in the library is apparent. We very much respect the privacy of the information that customers access, it is of the utmost importance to us and we strive to protect that. The building itself is public. Any filming or photography is permissible as long as it does not violate our rules of conduct.

Our rules of conduct policy is strictly enforced. If anyone is intoxicated or harassing others that is a violation of those rules and the person is asked to leave the building. If the problem persists, the person is trespassed from all library branches.

We strive to make the library experience a pleasant one for all our customers. The rules of conduct is in place to assist us with that. We appreciate customer feedback as we continue to improve our service.

car crash at Downtown Library

Friday, April 18, 2008 – 9:50 am

Car CrashWell, there’s been a little more excitement than usual at the Downtown Library. Early Sunday morning (4/13, 2:30 a.m.), coincidentally at the very start of National Library week, a car crashed through the northside windows of the library and demolished two staff workstations - thank goodness it was the middle of the night so no one was working (we’re dedicated workers but we don’t work 24/7)! There was glass everywhere and the furniture and computers in two cubicles were destroyed. The car was reported stolen later in the  morning (10 a.m.) though the police found that the woman who reported the car stolen had injuries consistent with the accident and cited her with property damage and failure to leave information. The staff area that was affected is where we process new materials. Those staff members took Monday off while carpet was removed and clean-up continued. On Tuesday, they were back to work again, processing books to get out onto the shelves for customers. So even though the driver of the errant car would like it, we’re afraid we’re not going to be able to offer drive-through service anytime soon. Thank goodness everyone is okay and please come check out some books/CDs/DVDs in celebration of National Library Week!

Internet Use in the Library

Friday, March 21, 2008 – 7:49 am

In case you pick up this week’s Inlander and read the story by Tim Bross about Internet usage in the library there are a few things you should know. First, all Internet stations are automatically filtered for any individuals under 18 years of age. A parent or guardian may choose to give them unfiltered access but the default is filtered. The default for adults is also filtered but in order to comply with a U.S. Supreme Court decision adults have the option of turning the filter off when they log onto one of the computers. We take our rules of conduct seriously and in the rare instances when a customer is viewing Internet content that is bothering someone else we remind the customer that they are in a public library and should make better viewing choices. This is very effective and we rarely have problems with people viewing inappropriate content. Our rules of conduct also state that if a person does not comply with a reasonable staff request they can lose their library privileges. You can find our Internet Use Policy on the policies page of the website and our Rules of Conduct here. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns – your opinion is important to us. Thank you.

Indian Trail Branch Library is 10 years old!

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 – 9:09 am

Boy, time sure flies, doesn’t it?  Our “new” Indian Trail branch library is celebrating its 10th birthday on Saturday, March 8th.  To honor the birthday we’d love to have the biggest one day circulation in the branch’s history, so we are encouraging everyone to check out at least 10 books on March 8th to show appreciation for this wonderful branch library.  Check out 10 on the 8th.

We Have New Hours!

Thursday, January 10, 2008 – 9:39 am

South Hill LibraryWe started new hours on January 2 at most of our branches. We now are open on Mondays at South Hill (shown at left) and Shadle and have changed the hours at Hillyard, East Side and Indian Trail. The first day of Monday hours at Shadle and South Hill were well attended and customers were pleased to have another day to visit their favorite library. In addition, the Northwest Room at the Downtown Library is now open Thursday mornings.
