  2. Why is it that parents can’t claim their children until they reach the age of 18 years old. I have twins that will graduate from high school in May of 2008, but they turned 18 on March 2, 2008, I am still responsible for them until they graduate, why is it that the government stop you from claiming them at the age of 17? I am asingle parent and this is just not a fair system.

  3. The definition of a qualifying child is the one used for purposes of claiming the child tax credit outlined by the IRS regulations.

Specifically, the child must be under age 17 as of December 31 and be the taxpayer’s qualifying child for dependency exemption deduction purposes.

A qualifying child, for purposes of the stimulus check, generally is a child who was under age 17 at the end of 2007, did not provide over one-half of his or her own support, lived with you for more than one-half of 2007, and has a Social Security Number.

To qualify, a child must be under age 17 as of Dec. 31, 2007.
