How to beat the gas price blues?

Friday, June 6, 2008 – 10:38 am

The answer may not be too far away.Indeed, the easiest way to avoid high fuel costs is to buy — and sell — locally.   With diesel breaking the $5.00/gallon mark, it doesn’t take a financial genius to figure out that the fewer miles your supplies and goods have to travel, the lower the costs.  As luck and a lot of short-sighted planning would have it, our economic system is nearly entirely dependent on cheap, abundant petroleum.  As such, examples of how to navigate high energy prices are hard to come by, with one exception: Bill McKibben’s Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future.  The synopsis of McKibben’s advice?  Go local.  Quickly.
