car crash at Downtown Library

Friday, April 18, 2008 – 9:50 am

Car CrashWell, there’s been a little more excitement than usual at the Downtown Library. Early Sunday morning (4/13, 2:30 a.m.), coincidentally at the very start of National Library week, a car crashed through the northside windows of the library and demolished two staff workstations - thank goodness it was the middle of the night so no one was working (we’re dedicated workers but we don’t work 24/7)! There was glass everywhere and the furniture and computers in two cubicles were destroyed. The car was reported stolen later in theĀ  morning (10 a.m.) though the police found that the woman who reported the car stolen had injuries consistent with the accident and cited her with property damage and failure to leave information. The staff area that was affected is where we process new materials. Those staff members took Monday off while carpet was removed and clean-up continued. On Tuesday, they were back to work again, processing books to get out onto the shelves for customers. So even though the driver of the errant car would like it, we’re afraid we’re not going to be able to offer drive-through service anytime soon. Thank goodness everyone is okay and please come check out some books/CDs/DVDs in celebration of National Library Week!

  2. Now will the SPL finally address the crime problem that goes on INSIDE the building. You know, the people who are allowed to come in intoxicated and harass women, start fights, and generally make this place less than safe for our children. I personally don’t like the way they pretend that this kinda thing doesn’t happen. What can we expect to be done about it? Star, Spokane,WA.
