We Have New Hours!
Thursday, January 10, 2008 – 9:39 am
We started new hours on January 2 at most of our branches. We now are open on Mondays at South Hill (shown at left) and Shadle and have changed the hours at Hillyard, East Side and Indian Trail. The first day of Monday hours at Shadle and South Hill were well attended and customers were pleased to have another day to visit their favorite library. In addition, the Northwest Room at the Downtown Library is now open Thursday mornings.

I see that SPL now has a genealogy blog. Terrific! I also wanted to let the community know that the Eastern Washington Genealogical Society has a blog at http://ewgs-spokane.blogspot.com, and that I also blog about local genealogical happenings at my personal genealogy blog, AnceStories: The Stories of My Ancestors at http://ancestories1.blogspot.com.

Thanks for your comments. Currently we are not able to expand hours at any other locations since our budget is set for all of 2008. The Spokane Public Library Board is committed to expanding hours at all locations. They prioritized the different options of which branch to expand. If funding were to become available we would next expand hours at the Hillyard branch which currently is only open 22.5 hours a week. It is the next most used library after Downtown, Shadle and South Hill. Also, our statistics show that many Hillyard customers do not use other branches as much as other branches’ customers do. If you’d like more information about our planning processes please don’t hesitate to contact the administrative offices at 444.5307. Eva Silverstone, Communications Manager

I’d really like to see all the branches finally address issues that affect patrons rights, safety, and privacy! And actually take them as seriously as we do, instead of ignoring them. (Such as filming during business hours, by news crews, and private citizens alike.) There’s also a problem that may be even worse at the downtown branch, and that is security failing to prevent intoxicated men from harassing women, starting fights/arguements, and generally making it impossible to be able to enter the building without being concerned for your safety. In fact,I’ve had to call the police several times about this problem myself. When can we expect something to be done?
